Location & History

Trebatsch_01.jpg

Located 100 km from Germany’s capital Berlin and 145 km from the city of Dresden in the beautiful spree region of Brandenburg the Sweet lupine Estate  (Süßlupine in German) is a 7.5-hectare property located in the 1000-year-old village Sarbrodt/Trebatsch of the local municipality of Tauche.

The nearest town is Beeskow. The history of the "sweet lupine", which gives the estate its name, is fascinating in that at the beginning of the thirties the first bitter-lupines were secretly bred in the Trebatscher seed breeding station to remove the bitterness from the plant and make them more palatable as sweet lupine. The seed breeding plant, initially located on the sweet lupine estate, where some of the original buildings still remain.

Ludwig The local hero explorer Leichardt was born in Trebatsch, and he is well known to the local residents, and there is a museum in Trebatsch dedicated to his memory and exploits. In recent years the Trebatsch villagers held a festival to commemorate 200 years of his history. To most Germans, he is unknown outside of Trebatsch, but in Australia where he conducted his explorations, he is quite famous. He is probably the best-known foreigner in Australia, and there are rivers and towns named after him. He dared to and succeeded in crossing the dangerous outback interior. On his last exploration of the Australian outback 170 years ago in 1848, attempting an east-west crossing of the vast continent, he never returned from this expedition.

The area is very peaceful, and it is a popular destination for those from the big towns to explore and enjoy the stunning scenery and the opportunity to go boating on the Spree river.
